Father Raped 7-Week-Old Baby, Police Say

    POSTED: 12:19 pm EDT June 8, 2005
    UPDATED: 9:09 pm EDT June 8, 2005

MILFORD. Ohio -- A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of raping his 7-week-old baby, News 5's Bina Roy reported.

The baby girl also has a broken leg, a broken wrist and bruises on her chest, nose and legs, Roy reported.

The baby's mother, Shannon Sorah, said her husband, Joseph Warner Sorah, admitted sexually assaulting his daughter.

"He admitted to doing it when no one was around," she said.

She said he slept next to the child's crib in another room.

"He said the reason why he wanted her to sleep in there was so I could get my sleep," she said.

Shannon Sorah said her husband had beaten her and their 2-year-old son, but she never imagined he could rape the baby.

"He's had problems. He needs help. He's sick. He's sick in a perverted way," she said through tears.

The baby's uncle, James Carpenter, said he never suspected anything.

"He's never really worked a job or anything. He's just a bum, basically. I never thought he was a child molester," Carpenter said.

Sorah was arraigned Wednesday on rape and child endangering charges and is being held in the Clermont County jail on $500,000 bond. He could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted, Roy reported.

"I don't want anything to happen to him, anything bad, but he deserves it right now," his wife said.

Milford police said they discovered the crime after two women called paramedics to examine the baby.

Paramedics and police found scarring and other signs of abuse on the infant.

A later exam later revealed the rape, police said.

The baby will be turned over to Protective Services when she recovers, Roy reported.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">IMO the mother should also go directly to jail.

    Edited to add THIS.

    Absolutley disgusting.

    Hang 'em high

Sexual assault of a child should be punishable by death, or maybe castration and life in prison.
But if he goes to prison, make sure he gets raped while he's in there.

After the story ran, Jenn and I had a discussion about it. Well, if you can call it that. She was going off about how they should torture this cat, then kill him, then torch his corpse, piss on it, and....ok maybe she wasn't that graphic, but her opinion of this dude was along those lines.

After the initial shock wore off, the defender in me did surface for a moment. And only a moment, again, if true, this is the most horrible thing you can imagine.

    But.....

Let me say this- you know, it's one thing to shoplift a candy bar. It's one thing to get a DUI. It's one thing to cheat on your taxes. Those are all crimes, but they can (sometimes) be attributed to a lapse in judgement.

I was thinking about this guy in Milford. It is inconceivable to me how any person with any degree of conscience could commit such an act. I suppose it's possible he was strung out on some kind of drug. But if not, then I do have to wonder if he is truly criminally insane.

Not that I feel that he should be exonerated, but I just can't fathom a human being with any level of conscience being capable of something like this.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I think we have an answer right here. The thing that committed this act apparently does not have "any degree of conscience". And I would argue that it is therefore not truly human.

Gae- Jenn thinks with her heart more than her mind. I, of course, emulate Mr. Spock.

    Dulc-

the problem is, if this person has no degree of conscience, then his lawyer may be able to raise an insanity claim. I'm not sure.

I will say this- I thought about the drug abuse scenario, and I think that probably is inapplicable. I've seen some people do some pretty low things for drugs (including killing family members), but no matter what they do, there's always an underlying motive- more drugs. I can't see how molesting a 7 year old would apply to acquiring more drugs.

    Most disturbing, i must say.
